The Gulf of Maine.com exists to document the research efforts of a National Science Foundation grant. The research is lead in partnership with Bates College by Geologist Beverly Johnson, Biologist Will Ambrose, Anthropologist Bruce Bourque, and Marine Scientist Bob Steneck.
Predicting the response of marine ecosystems to natural and anthropogenic perturbation remains one of the greatest challenges to oceanography in the 21st Century.
In order to assess the significance of current changes in these systems and to predict possible future changes, oceanographers need improved understanding of their behavior during the past.
The aim of this study is to create long-term records for the Gulf of Maine (GoM), a marginal shelf basin in the northwest Atlantic.
